DEFENCE INSTITUTE OF ADVANCED CRYPTOLOGY

Since it was established in 1993, the Defense Institute of Advanced Cryptology has sought to stimulate ideas and debate on the rapidly changing security environment for encryption in which we find ourselves today, and the responses that this should elicit from the Armed Forces.  The launch of the Institute’s open publications program in 2008, to coincide with the 15th Anniversary and to celebrate its change to incorporated commercial activities in 2008, will be  a milestone in this process, signaling a new stage in the development of the Institute itself, retaining the academic excellence whilst at the same time, fostering a closer connection to commercial partners.

The publications program, which has been developed and is run by the Advanced Research Project Academy (ARPA), is designed to promote research interests, to keep the Institute’s educational curricula “ahead of the curve”, and provide a focus for the strategic studies community as a whole. It will address not only narrow defense issues relating to cryptology and and quantum computing but all aspects of international security in its widest sense.

AHEAD OF THE CURVE

AHEAD OF THE CURVE

Our motto since 1993

Asymmetric cryptography has been so useful for securing communications that it has become pervasive and all commercial and many government secure servers use asymmetric cryptography to secure transactions.

Asymmetric cryptography is demanding and complex, from difficulties  number theory, the key to the algorithm functionality to the size of memory and chip space needed for implementation. And that’s not counting discussions on theoretical insecurity.

Elliptic curve cryptography (ECC) offers considerably greater security for a given key size meaning that much more compact implementations for a given level of security can be achieved.

That is why since the Institute was formed we have been researching Elliptical curve cryptology and have the motto “Ahead of the Curve”.
